Often referred to as the "romanticist on the throne", he is remembered mostly for the many fine buildings he  built in Berlin, Potsdam, as well as for the completion of the Gothic Cathedral at Cologne. He was a political conservative, and in 1849 was offered  the title of Emperor of the Germans by the Parliament in Frankfurt, which he rejected.
