DESCRIPTION
Here is a superb Coalport plate, bearing the ORDER OF THE GARTER. Probably made for the state banquet at Windsor Castle. This highest order of chivalry was founded in 1348. Edward III was dancing with his mistress and she lost her garter on the floor. This caused much amusement among the watchers. The King, taking offence to this, put it on his own leg, and said "Honi soit qui mal y pense" shame on him who thinks ill of it. He said that they may laugh now, but he would make it the highest order in the land, such that men would clamour for the honour to wear it.
Members are limited to 24 'companions' including the monarch. They have the right to fly their banners within St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Once a year, new companions are invested, followed by a state lucheon in the banquetting hall, attended by the Royal Family.
